He’s been a fabulous horse to be involved in winning some big races, sadly he picked up a leg injury in December 2015 which has again recurred and as he is almost 10 years old now is the right time to retire whilst he’s young enough to retrain as a riding//companion horse..

National Hunt trainer Paul Nicholls has saddled some big names in his time, with the likes of Kauto Star, Deman and Big Bucks helping the Somerset handler to ten trainer’s titles.
The horse that I own a share in, Alcala, can’t quite claim to match those racing greats just yet, but he can certainly put his name down as the flag bearer for Team Ditcheat over the summer.
Five victories on the spin included an impressive success in the Listed Summer Plate at Market Rasen, moving his record to six wins from his last eights starts since winning for the first time over fences at Ludlow in April.

Plenty of jumps racing fans, trainers and jockey’s class this weekend’s meeting at Chepstow as the real start of the National Hunt season.
For many, the road to the big Spring festival’s at Cheltenham, Punchestown and Aintree start this Saturday. With the big names returning to action after spending the hotter months on their holidays.
For other horses, it’s time to mix it with the big boys after plenty of action through the summer.
That’s exactly what Alcala has to do at Chepstow tomorrow (Saturday) as he’s been entered in another Listed race, this time the totequadpot Novices’ Chase, also known as the Robert Mottram Memorial Trophy.

It’s a feat that is far from an easy one to achieve, and although Alcala might not be the best horse the 10-time champion handler has ever trained, he’s certainly moved up the pecking order after landing a famous five of his own.
